Dentist or denturist: who to see for dentures

Updated October 24, 2026 · 3 min read · General information, not dental advice

A denturist is a licensed oral health professional who makes, fits and repairs dentures, and you can usually see one directly, without a referral. A dentist examines and treats your teeth and gums, and can also provide dentures.

If you are getting dentures, many people see both: a dentist for any extractions and the health of the mouth, and a denturist for the dentures themselves.

Dentures and the Canadian Dental Care Plan

  • The CDCP covers complete dentures, denture repairs, relines and rebases.
  • Partial dentures, immediate dentures and overdentures need approval before treatment (preauthorization).
  • Denturists can be CDCP providers: ask the clinic whether it accepts CDCP and bills Sun Life directly.

Questions people ask

+Do I need a referral to see a denturist?

Usually not: you can book with a denturist directly. If you need teeth removed first, that is done by a dentist or oral surgeon.

+Does the CDCP pay for dentures?

Yes, complete dentures, repairs and relines are covered; partial, immediate and overdentures need preauthorization. Your co-payment depends on your family income.
